365 – Day 252 – Meekyoung Shin

Day 252
Meekyoung Shin (!967-)
Ghost, 2011
Korean artist Meekyoung Shin is known for her replica ceramic works, copied from museum collections, and made from soap. Exquisitely carved, the soap vases in her ‘Translation: Ghost’ series move the precious, fragile porcelain object into the everyday; but still creating an unstable object. This idea is also seen in an earlier series ‘Translation: Toilet-Project’. Begun in 2004, it consists of little soap Buddhas that people have washed their hands with in the bathrooms of galleries and museums. She is about to show in Sinopticon; an exhibition of contemporary chinoiserie showing in four venues across Plymouth from 28 April to 7 July 2012. More about her here.
52
52 is a project I have set myself; since the beginning of 2013 I have been sending out, via social media and my website, info and an image of a photographer of my choice. I do this to highlight and explore the range of photography that also speaks to me, and I say why within each post.On Twitter
